Persepolis: visitor walkway repairs continue to protect historic stone

Mehr News Agency reported on 27 October 2026 that repairs to Persepolis’s wooden visitor walkways are continuing. In the interview, provincial heritage official Sadegh Zareh said some work had been completed while further repairs remained under way. The paths help protect historic stone from visitor traffic.

Editorial perspective: this update highlights a less conspicuous aspect of conservation than the restoration of a sculpture or carved relief. The way people move through a site is also part of its conservation design. Visiting allows people to encounter the material, but need not make every ancient surface a walking surface.

Interpreting such a project requires distinguishing three things: completed work, the portion still to be delivered and the results to be observed over time. An account of progress addresses the first question only in general terms. On its own, it cannot establish a measured reduction in wear or provide a documented comparison between earlier and later conditions.

The news therefore concerns the continuity of maintenance. This report does not describe the works as finished or assign performance figures that have not been supplied. A useful follow-up would identify the sections actually completed and provide observations about their use. Such evidence would allow readers to move from an announcement of activity towards an assessment of outcomes for the historic material.
